Tab on iPad

Tab on iPad

I was taking notes on my iPad the other day and came across the situation when I needed to create a a few bullet points. Firstly, bullet points don’t really exist on the iPad in the regular notes application, but I just decided to use *’s. Then I needed to create sub lists under my bullet points and reached for the Tab key. After a little poke around on the keyboard, I found that there is no Tab key on iPad.

There is however, one little trick that you can use in it’s place. The number of fingers that you press the space bar with dictates the number of spaces that will be placed on the page. For example:

1 finger tap on the space bar = 1 space
2 finger tap on the space bar = 2 spaces (or a full stop + space if you don’t quite time it right)
3 finger tap on the space bar = 3 spaces
4 finger tab on the space bar = 4 spaces i.e. 1 tab width

It’s not an official Tab replacement as such, but it’s less hassle than pressing the space bar 4 times in succession, only to get the full stop and have to backspace and redo again.
What do you use for a Tab? Do you think Apple should include a tab somewhere on the iPad keyboard? It’s certainly big enough…
